2.2 Previous Studies on the Appraisal System
The Appraisal System depends on the interpersonal function of Halliday’s SystemicFunctional Linguistics, which pays attention to the lexis of texts and discourses. Martin actuallystarted to study Appraisal System since 1990s. His paper Beyond Exchange: Appraisal Systemsin British published in 2000 makes the Appraisal System known to the public (Martin, 2000).Martin & Rose take the Appraisal System as a sub-system of discourse-semantics (Martin &Rose, 2003). Martin & White make a detailed introduction to the Appraisal System, whichstands for the maturity of the Appraisal System (Martin & White, 2005).On September 30, 2012, Wang Zhenhua interviewed Martin. When it comes to theAppraisal System, Martin corrected an error that a lot of people have done even includinghimself. He said that the Appraisal System is an analytical framework within SystemicFunctional Linguistics, and should not be called the Appraisal Theory (Wang Zhenhua, 2014).However, it could be found that most of the thesis in China called it the Appraisal Theory, which should be corrected from now on.As a useful tool, Appraisal System has been adopted to analyze various types of discourses, such as news reports, literary works, magazines, and medium discourse and so on, which hasbecome more and more popular.
