5.1 Results
The subjects were composed of two samples. Sample 1 stands for internationalbusiness major students and sample 2 represents English major students. Table 4 is adescriptive statistics for the subjects’ mean total score. The table demonstrated that themean total score of sample 1’s ICS is 84.77 and the mean total score of sample 2’sICS is 88.52 (ISS total score is 120). For sample 1, the Median value and Mode valueare a little bit far from each other (i.e. 85.00 and 75.00), which means that about 50percent of the subjects’ mean ICS total scores are lower than 85 and the mostfrequently appeared ICS score is 75. For sample 2, the Median value and Mode valueof sample 2 are close to each other (i.e. 89.00 and 85.00), so it’s shown that about 50percent of the subjects’ mean ICS total scores are lower than 89 and the mostfrequently appeared ICS score is 85. Both of the values of Skewness and Kurtosis ofsample 1 (-.11 and -.57) and sample 2 (.12 and -.51) are below 1, which indicates thatthe subject’s total scores are positively distributed. Moreover, the value of Std.Deviation of sample 1 (SD=11.15) and sample 2 (SD=10.99) is relatively small, whichshows the subjects’ total ICS scores have a central tendency. According to ZhouXingying (2007: 64), ICS scores ranging from 80-100 are defined as Moderate Level and 100-120 as Advanced Level. Table 4 shows that most of the subject’s ICS level insample 1 (M=84.77) and sample 2 (M=88.52) is moderate. It suggests that, in general,both international business major students and English major students have arelatively positive attitude toward intercultural communication, and they have gonebeyond the uncertainty stage and are approaching the stage of agreement. But there isstill room to improve their ICS level.

Conclusion


The development of new transportation and information technologies hasconnected all nations, which forced us to prepare to deal with a wide range of personsfrom diverse cultural backgrounds. The cultivation of a global mind-set has becomepivotal for people in this modern age and a strong demand for a greater understandingand sensitivity towards people from different cultural backgrounds. As a keycomponent of ICC, intercultural sensitivity is taken as one of the most cr ucialcapabilities that enable us to adapt to a broad range of cultural backgrounds. Byundertaking a comparative study into ICS between international business majorstudents and English major students, this thesis aims to enrich the research of ICS andICC and intercultural teaching in China. Major findings of the study are demonstratedas follows:Firstly, the general ICS level of both international business students and Englishmajor students was moderate. That is to say, both samples showed positive attitudetowards intercultural communication. But the ICS level of English major students wassignificantly higher than that of international business students.
