In only 10% of 191 nations are the people ethnically or racially homogenous. Never before in history have so many inhabitants traveled beyond their homelands, either to travel or work abroad, or to flee as refugees. In host countries, the social fabric is being reconfigured and strained by massive waves of immigrants, whether legal or illegal. It is estimated that Chinese now constitute 3% of New York City’s population, with a quarter million of them concentrated in Manhattan Island’s Chinatown, which overflows into older ethnic neighborhoods. This is the largest Chinese expatriate group outside Southeast Asia. Many corporate and government leaders, business students and citizens still operate with dated mindsets regarding the world, the people in various societies, the nature of work, the worker, and the management process itself. The Industrial Age has given way to the Information Age, and we can only speculate on its replacement in the next one hundred years.


Thus, today’s leaders are challenged to create new models of management systems. For that to happen, managers and other professionals must become more innovative and recognize the contribution of each individual or unit to the effective workings of the whole.


These dramatic changes in the workplace are producing some interesting challenges for everyone, from entry-level employees to top management. All must face the misunderstanding, communication breakdown, conflict, and even failure that can result when people from widely diverse backgrounds must pull together as a team or at least complete some sort of business transaction together. But these changes also offer bountiful opportunities for new levels of growth, innovation, expansion, and productivity. This research is about success-fully meeting the challenges and prospering from the opportunities.


Globally, cross-cultural research has become increasingly essential. In multicultural societies like the UK, the USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, there have been an increasing number of people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Meeting the needs of our multicultural society requires a cultural awareness of the diversity and commonality in people’s beliefs and practices. This, I argue, can be obtained by research, particularly the qualitative approach. Hence, cross-cultural research is a valuable tool for advancing cultural awareness of belief systems and practices among diverse groups.
