You will write a short business report of three to five pages focusing on a Canadian business
issue on any one of the recommended topics listed in this assignment sheet or, if your
instructor allows it, a topic of your own. Important: if you decide to create your own topic,
you must have it approved by your instructor. Reports on topics that have not been
approved may not be awarded a mark.
Why should I learn to write a short informative report?
In a
business environment, you will often be asked to write an informative report by an
employer, client or colleague who needs specific information in order to make a business
decision. You will normally have two objectives when writing an informative report:
to find and synthesize information from numerous sources and to package it so
that the person who requested it can find what he or she needs quickly
to analyze or interpret this information so that you can show the reader how it
relates to the decision that has to be made
In either case, your most important consideration as a researcher, writer and employee is to
ensure that the information you find and the analysis you perform of that information are
worth the wages you have been paid.
What restrictions or special requirements apply to this assignment?
Be sure that you meet all of the requirements listed below. If you fail to meet any one of
these requirements, your assignment may be significantly penalized.
The report must be no less than three pages and no more than five pages long,
not including front and back matter.
You must directly incorporate a minimum of three credible, relevant sources of
information.
One of your sources must be an interview (in person or via telephone, email or
other media) with a credible, relevant person.
You must accurately cite all of your sources.
Important Note: citing your sources inaccurately or failing to cite your
sources may result in a charge of plagiarism.
Any facts or
statistics you use must be Canadian, or you must show how these
facts and statistics are relevant to a Canadian business.
Your report must follow all of the appropriate writing and formatting conventions
described in this course.

What should I write about?
For each of the topics listed below, assume the same scenario: you are an employee in a
mid-size Canadian business that employs somewhere between 50 and 250 people and
makes a profit of 2 to 10 million dollars per year (make this assumption just to give yourself
an idea of the kind of resources this company is likely to have). Your employer or manager
has asked that you write this report.
1. Four of my employees have taken time off work because of repetitive strain injuries.
What are the primary causes of repetitive strain injuries in a company like ours, and
what are some Canadian companies doing to prevent them?
2. Our servers seem to be constantly tied up with employees’ personal email and
Internet searches. It would cost our company too much to increase our bandwidth or
server size, so I’d like to ban employees from using our computers for personal email
