In order to find a suitablecategorization and to generalize the results, a large amount of data is necessary. This has ledto the increased use of computerized text corpora in linguistic research since the late 1980s.⑴The analysis of large corpora demanded the development of computational tools. Onlinelexical databases and discourse parsers have been developed. These tools have been used forresearch on natural language processing focusing on different textual phenomena.Lexical cohesion has been widely investigated in computational linguistics because it isrelatively easy to compute compared to other text properties. Research on lexical chaining,reference resolution (the COREA project: https://www.cnts.ua.ac.be/-hoste/corea.html) andtopic detection and tracking are all related to the study of lexical cohesion. They all provide abasic background for the study of lexical cohesion.



1.2 Purpose of the Study
As we all know,the traditional method of teaching English vocabulary is to teach themeaning of the word separately. Usually vocabulary is taught in separation of grammar. Thathas caused a problem: even if a foreign language learner has understood the dictionarymeaning of one word,he still cannot grasp the exact meaning in different context when thatword is used.From the point of view of Corpus Linguistics, there is a close connection between theunit of meaning and lexical cohesion,which means that the realization of lexical cohesion can be embodied in lexical items interiorly. And the large amount of linguistic data in thelinguistic corpus makes it possible to study lexical cohesion and lexical co-occurrence bydoing the contrastive research in the use of lexical items.Therefore, this thesis paper is to make a contrastive study between the Native Speakers'Corpus (LFF) and Chinese English Learners' Corpus (CLEC). By studying the relevant coreword ‘ scollocation, colligation, semantic preference and semantic prosody, this study intendsto find out the respective features of native speakers' and Chinese English learners' lexicalcohesion and aims at analyzinghow the ChineseEnglish learners realize the lexical cohesion inthe unit of meaning. It is hoped that this thesis will cast some doubt on traditional methods ofvocabulary teaching. And it will provide a basis for English teachers to teach English wordsmore efficiently from the aspect of lexical cohesion by using the Sinclair's MaximalApproach in studying the meaning. In such a way of teachingEnglish,Chinese EFL learners'discourse can become more authentic and more coherent.


Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 Categorization and Definitions of Lexical Cohesion
A standard book on lexical cohesion is Cohesion in ^ngfe/zbyHalliday and Hasanin 1976,which marked the establishment of the cohesion theory.In Halliday and Hasan's viewpoint,the concept of cohesion is described as “a semantic one and it refers to relations of meaningthat exist within the text and that define it as text". [7:49] According to Halliday and Hasan,"cohesion expresses the continuity that exists between one part of the text and another". [8:299]The two authors devoted a lot of parts of their book to the grammatical cohesion, and theyalso discussed lexical cohesion in that book.
