1.1 Research Background
词汇的三大要素(语音,词汇和语法)之一,是语言的基本材料。没有它,语言有没有实际意义。这是举世公认的,在英语教学中,词汇的学习是一个耗时的工作。更糟的结果不理想,从而影响英语学习了很多,尤其是在高中。因此,如何帮助学生解决或缓解问题的词汇学习显得尤为重要。由于结构主义的影响,词汇教学只教单词的含义。学生易学的话没有任何兴趣,他们无法积累词汇死记硬背。因此,学生没有形成听,说,写的能力。如何教vocabulaiy有效将直接影响到学生是否了解和掌握英语或没有。Vocabulary, one of the three elements (of pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar), is the basicmaterial of language. Without it, the language has no actual significance. It is universally acknowledgedthat vocabulary learning is a time-consuming job in English teaching and learning. Even worse the resultsare not ideal,which affects English learning a lot especially in senior high schools. So how to help thestudents solve or alleviate the problem of vocabulary learning becomes particularly important.Due to the impact of Structuralism, the vocabulary teaching is only teaching the meanings of words.Students only leam words by rote without any interest that they fail to accumulate vocabulary. Therefore,students do not form the abilities of listening, speaking and writing. How to teach vocabulaiy effectivelywill directly affect whether students understand and master English or not.


1.1.1 Significance of Vocabulary in Learning English
According to the New Curriculum Standards of English in China,the senior high school studentsshould leam and use more or less three thousand and three hundred words as well as four or five hundredidioms and set phrases. What is more, the students should utilize those words and phrases to understandother people's intends or attitudes and express their own feelings.Learning vocabulary is very important in foreign language learning or the second language learning.But the research about vocabulary learning did not begin until the beginning of the nineteen seventies.Since then, applied linguistics has gained more and more attention and development.
Michael J. McCarthy, a world famous linguist, noticed that "it is the experience of most languageteachers that the single, biggest component of any language course is vocabulary. No matter how well astudent leams grammar, no matter how successfully the pronunciation of the second language or the foreignlanguage is mastered without words to express a wide range of meanings, communication in the secondlanguage or a foreign language just can not happen in any meaningful way."(McCarthy 1990).Laufer (1986) further showed us “no text comprehension is possible, either in one's native language,or in a second language or a foreign language, without understanding the text's vocabulary."(Laufer 1986;24). Krashen (1981) also clearly indicated that "Vocabulary is of prime concern in foreign settings becauseit plays a dominant role in classroom success.” (P29-30)In a word, vocabulary plays a very important role in all parts of teaching English, including writing,reading, speaking, listening besides translating.
