摘要:本文是英语词汇学论文,研究结果发现:两种词汇教学方法对于促进学生的词汇短期记忆方面都具有促进作用。然而自然拼读法对于促进学生的词汇长期记忆方面更为显著。
1 Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
In primary school, English is a big challenge for students who just contact it as a new language. English vocabulary as the basis and also a significant part of English teaching cannot be ignored. As there are quite a number of words for the beginners to memorize, it may be a great difficulty for them. Lack of necessary vocabulary could further hinder their other parts of English learning, such as reading, listening, speaking and writing. And as time passes, the students might lose their English learning passion and motivation gradually. What is worse, some students may develop a strong dislike of English learning. However in most vocabulary teaching, teachers always choose traditional methods, which include repeatedly reading and writing the words over and over again and using International Phonetic Alphabet. Although by stimulating the mind repeatedly, the repeating way can make the students memorize the words in a sense, it could bring burden for the young primary school students. Some of students would write a little pronunciation memo which is the Chinese pinyin or Chinese words pronounced like the English pronunciation under the words. For example, ‘sky’ labeled as ‘sigai’. The memo can badly influence the students to read the words correctly and their future speaking skills. In addition, the mechanical repeating method has no advantage in long words memorization. Without connection between reading and spelling of the letters, it is pretty hard for students to memorize the long words. At last, this method cannot help students to form self-study habit for there is no connection between new words and old words.

1.2 Significance of the Study
Phonics is generally applied in children’s vocabulary learning where English as the mother tongue. At present, in China, the scholars and teachers are attempting to introduce this method to the primary school students. Nowadays, the English capability is more inclined to the practical ability, especially the communicating ability. As the basis of communication, reading and spelling play an important role in the future study. If the children get wrong pronunciation, they may not only memorize the words in a wrong way but also have less confidence in communication. As for spelling, it may have great influence on the writing skill. Even if the students want to express their own thinking, the wrong spelling would
