A global link between national diversity policies? The case of the migration of Nigerian physicians to the UK and USA\

Abstract
 
This paper considers global diversity management in relation to migrationfrom Africa, specifically Nigeria, of doctors to the UK and the USA. It seeks todemonstrate the importance of global diversity strategies for African countries, oftendriven by ethnic tensions. It argues that these tensions play their part in the decisions tomigrate. It also brings in the triadic relationships to global diversity analysis anddemonstrates that diasporic professional groups play often hidden roles in the diversitystructures of the destination country and provide important means of connecting with theircountry of origin.

4 The survey was of 9,300 Staff and Associate Professional doctors and was conducted by the
Health Policy and Economic Research Unit of the British Medical Association in 2004 and
subsequently analysed by Oikelome and Healy (2005). The respondents held qualifications from
Africa (14.5 per cent), Asia (54.1 per cent), Western Europe (7.7 per cent), Eastern Europe (2.5
per cent) and the Middle East (5.8 per cent). The paper presents data on the conditions of work
experienced by overseas-qualified doctors. In the survey, doctors with qualifications from Africa
were the second largest (14.5 per cent), next to Asia (54.1 per cent).
