The Difficulty of Achieving One’s American Dream:An Analysis of Age Discrimination in the Workforce


 If you had asked a 50-year-old person twenty years ago, or even ten 代写美国论文years ago, what his/her American dream was, there is a great chance that the answer would’ve been a lot different than what it is today.  A lot of strain has been placed on older workers for many years now because employers often question their abilities because of their age and the changing dynamic of the workforce.  In the area of technology, for example, younger workers were—and still are—often assigned to those tasks because the older worker is percieved as not being familiar with many technological advances.  Despite the fact that the Age Discrimination in Employment Act was signed in 1967, 40 years ago, ageism is still prevalent in the workforce due to the ineffectiveness of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission as well as the cost and difficulty for workers to prove this type of discrimination.  Thus, age discrimination presents barriers for older people and, as a result, one can argue that the viability of the American Dream – economic opportunity commensurate with ability and accomplishment – diminishes as people grow https://www.51lunwen.org/mgthesis/2011/0617/1329341418.htmlolder.

In order to expand on the concept of age discrimination and its negative effects on older people, it is important to first define the term.  Helen Dennis and Kathryn Thomas describe age discrimination as the concept “[w]hen age biases negatively affect workplace decisions about employment, termination, retirement, benefits, and training and promotion opportunities” (84).  Their article entitled(命名为) “Ageism in the Workplace” begins with the idea that ageism is not only evident明显的 in the workforce, but also in other areas such as “the media, healthcare, education and advertising” (84).
