1. Introduction

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a concept rapidly moving into the mainstream of business thinking and is now seen by many to be of major importance. Indeed, evidence to support this argument is not hard to find. Nowadays all one has to do is pick up a newspaper or watch the news to see that modern businesses are increasingly striving to be seen as ‘ethical’ and ‘good for society.’

However, it is alarming to note that it is usually only big businesses that catch the headlines for behaving ethically. Grayson (2005) argues that “most of the attention to date in the CSR debate has focused on the impact on society of multinational business, who tend to be the household names and targets of NGOs and media campaigns.” But as Pryce (2002:140) argues, “CSR should not be the preserve of the usual suspects, the world has already moved on.”

Inspired by the statements above, this study aims to address the concept of CSR from a different angle, that being an SME perspective. If CSR is to continue to grow in prominence and bring about real change, it needs to include and engage businesses of all sizes, not just large.
