EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This report aims to provide a balanced critique of the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility from the perspective of an SME. It is argued that because the development of the concept has mostly occurred in a large business context, much of the terminology and definitions of CSR are less relevant to SMEs and are a major reason why the concept has yet to fully engage the small business community.  The main arguments for and against CSR’s relevance to SMEs are collected from the literature and directly contrasted with the opinions of the Managing Director of Cupel Solutions, a UK  based SME. It is found that some aspects of CSR, particularly employment and reputational issues, are relevant to this company, but they do not formally acknowledge the concept in strategic terms.  It is concluded that the underlying principles of CSR are present in both small and large companies and it is not necessarily the objectives of CSR that are the problem, but more the way the agenda is commonly framed. Final recommendations for improving the relevance of CSR to SMEs are then provided. These include changing the terminology, consolidating support and providing more practical examples so as to improve understanding and encourage more SMEs to undertake CSR.
