摘要:This paper aims to conduct a comparative study of the English vocabularylearning strategy between the junior and senior middle school students, and then toknow the comprehensive situation of vocabulary learning strategy and general beliefsof students between junior and senior middle schools in the process of vocabularylearning.

middle and primary schoolsstudents is divided into 9 degrees according to New Criteria for English Courses forstudents in senior middle school. When graduating, students should pass Grade 7 withthe demand of 3500-4000 words, which is much more than the demand of juniormiddle school. Meanwhile, a large number of students feel frustrated when trying toremember the pronunciation, spelling, the Chinese meaning and usage of thevocabulary. And they forget the new words quickly, and can’t use them correctly andproperly. There are strong reasons to investigate and do the research on thevocabulary learning strategy to figure out what vocabulary learning strategies studentsactually use in their learning process and provide them with appropriate learningstrategies to help learners to learn English vocabulary more effectively andprofoundly.

2. Literature Review


2.1 Studies of Vocabulary Learning Strategies
This part will address the topic on vocabulary leaning strategies, based onlanguage learning strategies. O’Malley and Chamot (2001) identify and categorizevocabulary learning strategies according to language learning strategies applied tovocabulary learning. Most language learning strategies are used for vocabulary task. Itincludes definition, classifications, functions, influencing factors of vocabularylearning strategies. As for the definition of VLS, Learning strategies must be mentioned. In the pastfew years, researchers have studied learning strategies from all aspects. However,there are still a great number of debates on what is the definition of language learningstrategies. The following are the definitions given by major researchers.Chamot concludes (1987) that Learning strategies are techniques, approaches ordeliberate actions that students take in order to facilitate the learning, recall off bothlinguistic and content area information.Rubin (1987) holds that Learning strategies are strategies which contribute to thedevelopment of the language system which the learner constructs and affect learningdirectly.

2.2 Theoretical Foundation of Vocabulary Learning Strategies
In recent years, many researchers have studied vocabulary learning strategies,and their findings provide fundamental theories for the study. Vocabulary LearningStrategies are based on the cognitive theory as the theoretical basis includingKnowledge of representation and Information processing of learning. Now the authoris going to describe them briefly as follows: Anderson thinks that Knowledge has two kinds of Representation in the brain:declarative knowledge and procedural knowledge.Declarative knowledge refers to the knowledge on “What it is”. Proceduralknowledge is related with the knowledge of proposition and propositional networkrepresentations. Proposition is the elementary and smallest unit in the narrativeknowledge, which is made up of arguments and relation. “Tom cut down the tree” is aproposition, “Tom” and “tree” of which are arguments and “cut down” is a relation.Multiple propositions can constitute a propositional network representation byinteraction among them, and then numerous propositional networks are able to forman article, and then this article also can be nested in a larger and more complexpropositional network.
