摘要:Vocabulary acquisition is the center of SLA. The amount of vocabulary has directinfluence on the transmission of the learner's information. It is often found that somenon-English majors make such errors in their writing as misspellings, incorrect collocationsand wrong choices of words.

Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Research Background
It generally involves five skills to leam English: listening, speaking, reading, writingand translation. Among them writing is believed to be not only important, but also difficult.There are two main ways of communication in our daily life, that is, oral language andwritten language. Oral language without a question takes up nearly 90 percent of what wecommunicate every day, however, written language is also indispensable. For example,students have to take notes in class, do homework and even write papers; employees have towrite e-mail, reports and draw up contracts, etc. So no matter what people do, writing isnecessary. Despite the importance of writing, some English learners cannot do it well. Thereoften appear errors concerning vocabulary, grammar and texture in their writing. The factorscontributing to this phenomenon are various such as a poor learning environment andincorrect learning techniques. But the role of vocabulary has to be taken into account as it isthe basis of English writing.Vocabulary acquisition is an important part for both first and second languageacquisition. A good command of vocabulary is the key of expressing one's feelings, thoughts,opinions and beliefs, etc. Therefore, there has been a boom in studies on vocabularyacquisition in recent years. In China, English is a compulsory course in higher educationinstitutions. Writing as a way of output has always been given great attention in collegeEnglish teaching. Students themselves also explore the ways to improve it. However,according to some statistics, many non-English majors didn't perform well in Englishwriting in CET-4 and CET-6. Most of them scored 7 out of 15. It is a big challenge facingEnglish educators and researchers to develop non-English majors' writing ability.

1.2 Research Objectives
Vocabulary acquisition is the center of SLA. The amount of vocabulary has directinfluence on the transmission of the learner's information. It is often found that somenon-English majors make such errors in their writing as misspellings, incorrect collocationsand wrong choices of words. The thesis centers on transfer errors in vocabulary. Somewriting samples were first collected. And then the author began to conduct data analysis toexplore the objectives of the thesis, that is, how many kinds of transfer errors are there innon-English majors’ writing, and what are the causes for them? Based on the answers to theabove questions and discussions, some implications were obtained for reducing the negativeinfluence of transfer errors. It is expected that the thesis would be of assistance in elevatinglearners' English writing.

Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 Language Transfer
Language transfer has been a focused, yet controversial problem to many linguists andforeign language teachers since it was put forward. Generally speaking it has gone throughthree stages. In the 1950s-1960s, language transfer played a very important part in SLAtheories, which constituted the basis of contrastive analysis along behaviorism. In the late1960s-1970s Chomsky's universal grammar prevailed.
