This thesis is mainly directed at thenarrow concept of the ecological documentary.

2.2 Commentary
Shi Qi (2000:179) once gave a brief summary of the commentary in TV documentary.He argues that the verbal language except the screen characters' language is calledcommentary in a TV documentary. While talking about the commentary in documentary,people have two different perceptions. One considers that it is located in the leading positionin a documentary, which can deepen the connotation and express the author's tendency andintention. Meanwhile, it can also make up the imperfection caused by time and space. Theother asserts the contrary; it calls for more thinking space to the audience and asks to reducethe commentary as far as possible or even give it up. As we all know, there are lots ofconceptual contents in an ecological documentary which cannot be directly expressed by theimages. Commentary is the most direct and effective means of transmitting information.According to the definition given by Zhong Danian and Lei Jianjun (2006: 54) inDocumentary: Image Meaning System, commentary is one kind of language attached to theimages and broadcasted by the commentator, it is the direct extemalization of the author'srational thinking and is used to introduce, explain, discuss or express the author's subjectiveemotion.
