Chapter one Literature Review
The Book of Songs is the first comprehensive anthology of Chinese poems including 305 poems of the Zhou Dynasty (1066-256 B.C.). It was originally called Shi (Poems) and Shi Sanbai (Three Hundred Poems). Each poem in The Book of Songs was set to music and could be sung. The compilers classified the 305 poems into folk songs, ceremonial songs, and sacrificial songs, according to their contents and the style of the music.

Early to the 18th century, William Jones (1746-1794), an British sinologist translated some poems in The Book of Songs. Since 19th century, more than 10 English versions of The Book of Songs have been published successively.
1871 saw the 1st English version, The She King(Oxford University Press), translated in prose by James Legge. And then he translated The Book of Songs in poetry in 1876. In 1891, two more English versions appeared. One is The Shi King (George Rutledge and Sons) by M.A. William Jennings, the other is The Book of Chinese Poetry (London) by Clement F.R. Allen.

More than 10 English versions have been published since 19th century. Among which were Book of Odes (London, 1905) translated by L.Cranmer-Byng, The Book of Songs (Allen and Unwin,1937) by Arthur Waley, The Book of Odes (Museum of Far Eastern Antiqiuties,1950) by Bernhard Karlgren, Shih-ching (Harvard University Press,1954) by Ezra Pound, The Book of Songs (Twayne Publishers,1971) by William McNaughton, Book of Poetry (Chinese Literature Press,1994) by Xu Yuanchong，Shi Jing Ying Yi by Wang Rongpei and Ren Xiuhua (Liaoning Education Publishing House，1995). The versions translated by Arthur Waley and Bernhard Karlgren were paid most attention by the world during the whole 20th century.

While the translation history of The Book of songs has a span of more than 200 years, domestic studies on the English translations of The Book of songs have a comparatively short history of two or three decades. The 1st article on this theme is “Dissemination and Study of The Book of Songs in the Western World” published in Literature Review written by Zhou Faxiang in 1993. (Li Yüliang, 2006: 36-38).
