摘要:It can also be the objective reason, like, it's not because the teacher tends to do it, butof the limited time in a class and heavy teaching task.It is hoped to get further improvement on the instruments of power distance questionnaireand observation scale.

sing a foreign languagewill gradually influence learners' cultural values. As the original study only carried out theinvestigation between non-English teachers and English teachers, it only explored the influencecaught by learning English. In the current research, another research subject, Japanese teachers, was added. Thus, the result would be richer and more convincing.According to Hofstede(1991), the power distance order from low to high is Englishspeaking countries, Japan and China. By studying and using English or Japanese for a long time, the Chinese college teachers might have been influenced by the cultures carried in English orJapanese due to the insuperability of language and culture. Therefore, the author proposed thefollowing hypotheses for the current study:(1) Because of the impacts of different culture value, in terms of power distance, there aredifferences among Japanese teachers, English teachers, and non-foreign language teachers.(2) The power distance order of these three types of teachers from low to high may beEnglish teachers, Japanese teachers and non-foreign language teachers.(3) The tendency of different power distance of teachers will lead to differentcommunication behaviors with their students in class. As a report of the research, the thesis consists of seven parts. Chapter one gives a briefintroduction of the research, including research background, motivation, objective andhypothesis. Chapter two reviews the concept of power distance as well as the studies on it both athome and abroad. Chapter three illustrates the research methodology, which involvesintroduction of questionnaire and observation scale, sampling, respondents and data treatment.Chapter four is the analysis of research result, Chapter five, six and seven are the discussion, conclusion and implications of the study.

Chapter 2 Literature Review

2.1 Power Distance
2.1.1 Mulder's Power Distance
The term power distance was firstly put forward by the Dutch social psychologist MaukMulder. He defined power as the potential to determine or direct (to a certain extent) thebehavior of another person or other persons more so that the other way round, and powerdistance as the degree of inequality in power between a less powerful Individual (I) and a morepowerful Other (0), in which I and O belong to the same (loosely or tightly knit) social system(Mulder, 1977:90).In the research, Mulder pointed out about 20 hypotheses, and proved them later. At last, heconcentrated on five of them and described power distance.(1) The mere exercise of power will bring in satisfaction.(2) The more powerful individual will strive to maintain or to increase the power distance tothe less powerful person.(3) The greater this distances from the less powerful person, the stronger the striving toincrease it.(4) Individuals will strive to reduce the power distance between themselves and the morepowerful persons.(5) The smaller the distance from the more powerful person, the stronger tendency to reduceit (Mulder, 1977:92).American researcher Kipnis also carried out laboratory experiments and arrived at similarconclusions with Mulder. He pointed out the more powerful persons tended to devalue the worthof the performance of less powerful ones and to attribute the cause of the less powerful efforts tothemselves (Kipnis, 1972).
