摘要:English writing has been concerned by more and more scholars since it became an independent subject.There are many studies on English writing teaching at home and abroad. Based on previous studies of thosescholars, this thesis tries to find out whether imitation writing approach is effectively in teachingnon-English postgraduates’ English academic writing under the memetics theory. Memetics is a new theoryto explain the principle of culture evolution based on the Darwinian, proposed firstly in Dawkins’ TheSelfish Gene in 1976. Meme has two meaning, the information stored in human’s brain is meme, and theinformation broadcasted by various kinds of methods is also meme. Meme survives relying on beingcopied and broadcasted; language is one of its carriers. In China, Professor He Ziran illustrated therelationship between meme and language teaching in 2005, he mentioned that meme had a positive effecton imitation teaching. From this point, the author tries to study whether the imitating writing approach isefficient on the teaching of postgraduates’ English academic writing.

Chapter Ⅴ Conclusion

 

This study tries to prove imitation writing approach is efficient in teaching postgraduates’ Englishacademic writing by classroom observation, test, and questionnaire. These are all presented in abovechapters. In this chapter, major finding will be summarized firstly, them limitation of this study, andsuggestions to future study will be proposed.

 

5.1 Major findings  
Generally speaking, the major findings of this study could be summarized from the following threeaspects:(1)Imitation writing approach is efficient in teaching postgraduates’English academic writing. It wasverified by the results of the pre-test and post-test.(2)The classroom atmosphere and interaction between the instructor and students in experimentalgroup is more positive than that of the control group, which can be showed by the results of classroomobservation forms. In imitation writing teaching class, students pay more attention to the teachingcontent.(3)Suitable model articles provided in the imitation writing teaching can help students know wellabout the layout and general structure of academic writing. This can be concluded from the results ofquestionnaire. In imitation writing teaching class, teacher should choose some articles with typical andspecific features, and also should pay enough attention to the students’ response and feedbacks to themodel articles.

 

5.2 Limitations of the study    
Firstly, the size of the population can be larger. The experiment in this research only takes 90populations, the more population involved, the results of the experiment might be more convincing.Secondly, future study should be carried out in a longer time; time lasted for the experiment shouldbe paid more attention to in the further study. Memetics applied in English writing teaching has fourstages: input, memory, processing and output, it couldn’t work significantly in a relatively short time.The more time learners devote to the practice, the better the results might be.Thirdly, the teaching material can be variable. The present research only used practical writingstyle; maybe one test of the subjects’ composition could not truly reflect the situation of allpostgraduates.Fourthly, this study compared imitation writing approach with group work and presentation,though the results of classroom observation, the results of pretest and posttest, and the results ofquestionnaires all show that imitation writing approach is efficient in the teaching of postgraduates’English academic writing, and is better than the group work and presentation, it cannot prove imitationwriting approach is better than all other approaches in any subjects’ teaching.

 

5.3 Suggestions for future research
