摘要:Through this study, the author hopes that this study can make supplement for thestudies of using metaphors to explore teachers' inner world and that it can be helpful forthe design of teacher education program.

, including the definitions of metaphor and the development ofits application, its application in education research and how it is used as a means touncover teaching beliefs. Studies at home and abroad on metaphors employed as a meansto explore teaching beliefs are presented. Lastly, it is a review on the categories ofmetaphors of teaching and teachers. The next part is about the research methodology. Inthis part, research purpose and participants and the instruments used in this study arediscussed. Questionnaire and interview are the two main approaches to achieve thoseaims. Part four is one of the key parts of this thesis, that is the results and discussion.Four kinds of metaphors are discussed in it. They are: metaphors of students in middleschools, metaphors of English teachers in middle school, metaphors of English teachingin middle schools and metaphors of schools. And the similarities and differences areanalyzed and causes that led to these similarities and differences are discussed. The fifthpart is the findings of this paper. It is about four categories of metaphors which areproduced by teachers and the implications we get from the analysis and some suggestionswe make for the program design of masters of education. The last part is a conclusion ofthe whole thesis.

6.Conclusion

 

After all the analysis, it comes to a conclusion. The whole paper includes six parts.Purposes of this study and how the author gathers information have been discussed. Thecore of the thesis is that the latent teaching beliefs behind the metaphors generated bypre-service and in-service teachers through a comparison. For the metaphors aboutstudents in middle schools, pre-service and in-service teachers share three points incommon. They both think that students are limited in schools with too much burdenwithout innovation. The difference is that in-service teachers are more negative towardstudents than pre-service teachers.
