Chapter Four Implications for Cultivation and Improvementof ICC in Adult English Teaching
4.1 Principles of culture teaching in adult English teaching
Conducting culture teaching in adult English teaching process can help studentslearn language points, get acquainted with related social and cultural knowledge, traintheir linguistic proficiency as well as improve their intercultural communicationcompetence. Nevertheless, culture teaching is not simply explaining cultureknowledge without principles. Culture teaching has impact on students’ values andworld outlook. That is why the principles of appropriateness, pertinence, andscientificity were proposed by Hu Wenzhong in 1997. According to proposals madeby scholars, the author has been exploring policies which are appropriate for cultureteaching in adult English teaching practice. One of the key principles of culture teaching is to help students to form the basicconcept of the equality of cultures. Every nation has its own culture and each culturehas its own characteristics, just like different races have different skin color and bodytype, but no better or worse for that. It is unreasonable to give the Western culturesuperiority even if English is the language spoken by the majority of developedcountries.

Conclusion
In the first place, adult students’ poor performance in English listening, speaking,reading, writing and translation lead to their unsatisfactory interculturalcommunication competence. However, adult students are eager to improve their ICC.In the second place, the unique characteristics of adult students require Englishteachers adjust teaching methods accordingly to meet students’ demand. Besidesenriching the theoretical knowledge, intercultural communication training andpsychological knowledge are also essential to teachers. Teaching for adults is alsosuggested to be integrated with various teaching approaches such as role play, movies,music, group work, and micro-lectures and so on. As for teaching instruments,multimedia and Internet are especially effective to adult students, which have beenproved in the experiment mentioned in this thesis. Last, adult students play the leadingrole in the whole process. The teaching effort doesn’t work unless the students learnby heart and find out the most effective learning method for themselves.
