As an important syntactic structure and focus marking method,it-cleft constructionhas always been a hot topic in linguistics.It has a specific form,namely,“it be+(cleftedconstituent)+that+(cleft clause)”.It is a special syntactic construction with the functionof highlighting and emphasizing.When Jespersen(1927)gave a special description ofthe it-cleft construction,the study of it-cleft construction has attracted the attention ofscholars at home and abroad.Their discovery is mainly related to its origin and function.However,not many studies have been conducted to probe into the syntactic andsemantic idiosyncrasies from the cognitive view,and to classify the it-cleft construction.

Historically,the study of it-cleft construction can be roughly divided into twoapproaches,one is non-cognitive approach,and the other is cognitive approach.Thenon-cognitive approach includes three schools.The first is the traditional grammarstudy represented by Jespersen(1927/1937),who described the syntax and semantics ofit-cleft construction in detail and put forward some important analytical methods toanalyze the origin of it,such as transposition method and intercalation method,whichhave also been called“clefting theory”.He argued that it-cleft construction gets itsname because it divides a simple sentence into two clauses that each have their ownverbs;The second is the study of transformational generative grammar,which focuseson the syntactic features of the construction and the origin of these features.The third issystemic functional grammar,which mainly focuses on the textual function andinformation structure features of this construction.In recent years,a new cognitiveapproach has been used to study the it-cleft construction.Some scholars discussed thesource of syntax and semantics of it-cleft construction from the perspective ofconstruction grammar.Generally speaking,there have been abundant research results,but there are still many problems.

1.2 Objectives and Significance

It-cleft construction is a common but unique structure,which is mainly used tohighlight a component in a speech or sentence for the purpose of emphasis.Scholars athome and abroad have shown strong interest in the research of it-cleft construction,which has produced many rich achievements.The author looks through thesis about thestudies of it-cleft construction and finds that previous studies mainly focus on the formand function of this construction.At the same time,with the deep study of thisconstruction,related it-cleft constructions have been discovered.However,there arecontroversies about the classification criteria of the it-cleft construction,which leads tothe unclear classification of it-cleft construction.In the author’s opinion,the existing classification of it-cleft construction is not reasonable enough.Based on this,the authorwill further elaborate the syntactic and semantic idiosyncrasies of it-cleft constructionby using the framework of figure-ground theory,in order to have a deeperunderstanding of the mechanism of it-cleft construction and clarify different types ofit-cleft construction,so as to make some contributions to the research of it-cleftconstruction.
