Internet: a Stimulus for the Creation of Public sphere

With the technology advancement, mobile phones have the access to internet, which speeds up the creation of public sphere. During such events as SARS, the Sumatra-Andaman Tsunami and London Bombings, the citizens played a key role in information production and spreading. These participant reporters have been popularly called citizen journalists and via their mobile phones and by using other technologies such as the internet they may make vivid contribution to the public sphere. When it comes to information transmission, people acquire unprecedented freedom due to features such as openness and equality of Internet media. They don’t have to passively accept the produced culture products and thinking concepts. On the contrary, they can freely choose the public opinion based on their necessity, and even get involved in the production of public opinion. On internet, people are not only listeners, but also active interpreters. Even if an introverted person who is not good at communication in reality can type his opinion into the computer and spread it on the Internet, or he can fulfill one Internet questionnaire by lightly clicking the mouse, and make his idea as one part of the public opinion, doing some contribution to the formation of public sphere. This is the power of interactive exchanges owed by Internet, which functions as the key factor of public sphere creation.

Internet integrates the properties of computer, television, recorder, telephone, game machine, printer and so on, or we can say that Internet is a melting pot of various traditional media, which combines all kinds of independent transmission types together. Internet is also a fusion of writing, oral, audio, graphic, table, picture and image transmission categories, and the transmission method can be easily altered according to different requirements, or several transmission types can be used together, which realizes the transmission of mass media. The wide plurality of voices facilitates the information spreading.

On Internet, it is very easy to get some fragmented information instead of systematic knowledge, and it is very popular to send mobile short message by Internet. While entertaining some people by spreading jokes and festival greetings, the appearance of Internet mobile short message has also induced many problems, with some vulgar information producing negative consequences. Instant communication tool is an important access to Internet transmission, however, it is not vey beneficial to individual development, since all popular instant communication tools have the grouping function, so it is very natural that people having the same hobbies or working in the same field have a greater tendency to discuss together, which provides a platform for professional research. But if a person comes to this platform very frequently without exploring any other communication platform, his development space will be narrowed.
