Research Methodology

The research involves qualitative and quantitative study since the study will try to find and build theories that will explain the relationship between trading in Canada and the UK and Canada and South Africa. There are two main advantages to using qualitative study initially than quantitative study. The first is it enables the researcher for interaction with respondents.

The research will be exploratory because it aims to determine the present facts as well as facts that are not yet explored about the phenomenon. Exploratory research will enable the research to look at the problem in both descriptive and exploratory manner. This approach is a preferred mean of finding out “what is happening to seek new insights” or “to ask questions or to assess phenomena in a new light”. This research will use the principal ways of conducting exploratory research, which include: literature search; talking to experts about the subject; and conducting in-depth interviews.

The majority of my project will be based on both primary and secondary research. This research ranges from existing sources such as the internet, CIA world fact book, directories, online magazines, company records, official statistics, government publications, trade associations and other published sources. The latter will be used in researching aspects such as consumer perceptions of hair care, socio demographic information, trade regulations for foreign exporters, and political stability in both countries. I will also include minimal primary research as it is impossible to directly reach the majority of potential consumers in both markets from Canada. Through exploratory research by utilising some contacts from these countries and their views and knowledge’s will be added to my project as qualitative data. The quantitative data I shall be using will comprise of various charts to demonstrate, ethnic distribution in countries, consumer demographics, distribution in income amongst different households etc. These visuals will provide a clear idea of trends in both markets and will thus aid in reaching and deriving an appropriate trade decision. As mentioned before qualitative data will help derive conclusions about market trends, consumer perceptions and socio cultural views towards hair care and its relationship to beauty.

According the CIA World Factbook, 2010, the geographic conditions of UK include a total area of 244,820sq.km.with a moderate climate. The population of UK consists of 62,113,000 people according to the latest survey conducted in the year 2009 with 0-14 years: 17.7% (male 5,490,592/female 5,229,691), 15-64 years: 66.5% (male 20,329,272/female 19,855,862), 65 years and over: 15.8% (male 4,063,357/female 5,472,683). The population growth rate is estimated at a rate of 0.28%. The language most used by people in UK is English, Welsh and Scottish form of Gaelic. (CIA, 2010)
