1.1 Background of the research

As one of the essential languageskills, writing is playing an important and essential role in English teaching.The new Curriculum criterion for English Education emphasizes that middle schoolstudents should learn to collect and prepare material according to writing requirements; andcan write short essays independently within the language scope learned under the guidance ofthe teachers. They can briefly describe characters or events base on the given words, phases orpassages, write an about 80-word composition, the meaning of which should be coherent andthere should be no many serious grammar mistakes. As for junior high school students, theyare tested on writing skill generally in some tests such as an Entrance Examination to seniormiddle school and the marks of the English writing accounts for 20 points of the total scores.That is to say, writing plays an important role both in individual development and in Englishlearning. Therefore, it is significant for teachers and students to lay emphases on Englishwriting. However, these years the teaching of writing has been ignored as the result ofovermuch concentration on the oral approach. The cultivation of listening and speaking skillsis paid much attention to in foreign language teaching in middle schools. And writing isalways regarded as the most difficult part of the four basic language skills and relegated to thelast stage in our teaching arrangement. The students regard writing as a most difficult problemand make it the last thing to be practiced.

However, due to the limitation of time and the heavy teaching tasks, especially for Grade 3 students, there is only a little class time used for teaching writing,which cannot guarantee enough writing exercises under the guidance of the teacher. Teacherspay little attention to teaching writing, most of the teachers who lack of the theoreticalknowledge of teaching writing, quite a number of them adopt the traditional English writingteaching, and all these reasons lead the students to be passive to learn writing. Some teacherseven think that writing practice in junior high school is merely a kind of imitation of modelessays. Consequently, they pay less attention to guide students to get a wide range ofbackground information by reading, and also neglect to permeate teaching and learningstrategies.
