Chapter 2   Literature Review 

Cooperative  Language  Learning  (CLL)  is  part  of  a  more  general  instructional approach  also  known  as  Collaborative  Learning(CL),  which  is  an  approach  to teaching that makes maximum use of cooperative activities involving pairs and small groups of learners in the classroom. It has been defined as follows: Cooperative  Learning  is  group  learning  activity  organized  so  that  learning  is dependent  on  the  socially  structured  exchanged  of  information  between  learners  in groups and in which each learner is held accountable for his or her own learning and is motivated to increase the learning the others. (Olsen and Kagan 1992:8) 

2.1   Studies Abroad 
D.W.Johnson  and  R.T.Johnson  have  suggested  that  cooperative  learning  is applied  on  groups  teaching  and  makes  the  students  studying  together  to  get  the highest  degree  on  their  own  study  and  other  group  members’  study.  They  have emphasized  that  cooperative  learning  can  raise  the  achievement  of  all  students,  help the  teacher  build  positive  relationship  among  students,  give  students  the  experiences they  need  for  healthy  social,  psychological,  and  cognitive  development,  as  it  replace the  competitive  organizational  structure  of  most  classrooms  and  schools  with  a team-based,  high-performance  organizational  structure.  (Johnson,  Johnson,  and Holubec 1994:2) In  the  book  cooperative  learning-theories,  Research  and  practice,  the  leader  of cooperative  learning,  Slavin  has  suggests  that  cooperative  learning  is  the  classroom teaching technology which aims to the students and encourage them to take part in the group  learning  activities  and  gives  them  praise  for  their  achievements.  Slave  also reviewed  several  cooperative  learning  methods,  and  he  also  summarized characteristics of cooperative learning as group goal, individual accountability, equal opportunities for success, team competition, and task specialization.
