摘要:The present study is an empirical research to describe the mental activities duringtranslation process while non-major students in vocational college make efforts to finishassigned English-Chinese written translation task, and analyze the cognitive features in termsof translation strategies and translation units. For methodology, psychologically oriented“Think-Aloud Protocols” (TAPs) was utilized to collect verbal data during translation process,along with written translation versions and the notes from participants as the complementary,all of which constituted triangulation system of data source for further analysis.

ief introduction of the whole paper, consists of thebackground of the study, the questions of research, the methodology of the research, thesignificance of the research and the structure of the thesis.Chapter Two is a general review of the previous studies in TAPs researches, translationprocess research as well as the current situation of translation teaching both at home andabroad. Different perspectives related the above areas will be introduced in this chapter. Andthen, Faerch’s Potential Strategy Indicators and Krings’ Specific Strategy Indicators as thetheoretical background of the case study will be illustrated in detail.Chapter Three focuses on the specific description of the experiment with Think AloudMethod as the approach to collect demanded data. The chapter includes the preparation for theTAPs experiment, the design of the experiment and the real performance of the experiment,which is beneficial to collect objective data during the process of TAPs experiment. Theauthor adopts Think Aloud Method to recognize and gather up necessary verbal reporting data,which pave the way for Think-Aloud Protocols analyses in the following chapter.Chapter Four aims to represent the procedures of data transcription, data coding andprotocols analysis in order to map students’ mental activities in translation processes. In thelight of the data transcription standard, the verbal reporting is selected and transcribed intowritten protocols, which are analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. According to thespecifically defined code system for Think-Aloud Protocols, the researcher maps the featuresof translation processes in terms of translation strategies and translation units.Chapter Five, which brings this paper to a close, makes a summary of the case study andmakes a conclusion of the main findings. The relevance between the conclusion of translationprocess and the development of current translation research is revealed. And moreover, thelimitations of this kind of case study are also presented in order to provide reference forfurther study in this and related area.
