摘要:Culture is both reflected by and carried through language. The ultimate aim of foreignlanguage education is to achieve intercultural communication. Accordingly, English teachingshould combine linguistic competence with communicative competence. However,interacting with others in foreign language involves more than mastering the accuratelinguistic knowledge but acquiring relevant cultural background information. Therefore, it isdefinitely necessary for cultivating intercultural communicative awareness to improve cultureteaching in college English education.
learning willdefinitely have a severe impact on effective intercultural communication and thedissemination of Chinese culture into the world.A successful culture teaching intends to improve foreign language learners’acknowledge on both target culture and native culture and on this basis to make themunderstand foreign culture in a rational way as well as interpret their own culture correctly.Foreign language education should focus on cultivating students’ cultural awareness. And bycultural awareness, it concludes the following aspects: the awareness of cultural diversity; theleniency of cultural differences; the empathy ability to foreigners; the awareness andintrospection on the values and behaviors of native culture. The ultimate aim of foreignlanguage learners is to transform their linguistic competence into intercultural communicativecompetence. In this sense, native culture teaching and target culture teaching should becarried out at the same time.The research on the Chinese cultural aphasia in college English teaching material hasbeen made on the basis of theoretical investigation. The major findings of the presentresearches are as following:New College English (Second Edition) is essentially based on the materials of culture.According to the definition of culture stated in Chapter Two, almost every aspect of culture isinvolved in it, such as literature, history, religion, social problems, science and technology,art and so on. However, most of cultural items comprised in the textbooks are in relation towestern cultures, especially about America and Britain, while little is as to Chinese culture.Therefore it calls a new generation of textbooks that fit for the culture-oriented Englishlanguage teaching.Chinese college students are incompetent in expressing Chinese culture in English. It isbecause Chinese cultural contents are very low in English teaching that makes a negativeimpact on international communication. Therefore, in order to overcome this weakness in ourEnglish teaching, Chinese culture should run through the whole process of teaching.Although college English teachers think that it is necessary to introduce Chinese cultureinto English teaching, Chinese culture has not been paid as much attention as that of westernculture. Most teachers assert that it is a matter of course to focus on western culture inEnglish teaching and learning. Besides, some teachers reflect the issue that it is difficult forthem to take every aspect of foreign language teaching due to the limitation of class hoursand teaching material. As the two major sources of culture input, both teachers and teachingmaterial leave much to be desired in introducing Chinese culture into English classroomteaching, thereby causing the phenomenon of college students’ Chinese cultural aphasia.All in all, from the researcher, we can find that even teachers and students are positive tointroduce Chinese culture into college English teaching and learning, they cannot achieve theobject just because of the insufficient Chinese culture knowledge and information in teachingmaterial.
5.2 Implications
This paper reports work in exploring theoretical and practical support for the Chinesecultural aphasia in college English teaching material, so as to make teachers and studentsconscious of the importance of integrating Chinese culture into college English teaching. Theimplications for college English education in China are as following:First of all, for
