摘要:College English teacher talk, differs with the language that teacher uses in other context,that is used to organize the English teaching activities, to convey language information andso on. Teacher talk is a significant factor of teaching researches. The analysis and study ofteacher talk can explore the relationship between teacher talk and teaching effects. In EFLclasses, teacher talk affects students learning and class atmosphere significantly.This paper studies the teacher talk in English classes for non-English majors based onmany teacher talk samples, to explore how the different teacher talk amount and languagestyles influence the language learners. Based on Krashen’s input hypothesis theory, Swain’soutput hypothesis theory and Long’s interaction hypothesis theory, this research chooses 6different non-English major classes in Shanxi Datong University as the research samples.The corpuses are collected by class view, class notes, audio record, questionnaire survey, etc.
Chapter I Introduction
It is widely known that English teaching, like any other second language teaching, isvery complicated a process in which teachers play very important roles. As the mostimportant factor of teachers’ performance, Teacher Talk (referred hereafter as TT) is not onlya simple tool of teachers to meet their aim of teaching, but is also the only resource throughwhich students can gain knowledge of the target language. In this point of view, teacher talkquality can leave a great impact on the students’ learning, and maybe can decide if theirlearning is failed or succeeded. Based on this information above, a systematic study on TTwill contribute a lot to second language teaching. Thus, teachers as well as learners andresearchers are paying more and more attention on TT. However, presently, studies relatedwith TT are only analyzing and concluding from teachers’ aspect, but seldom from the pointof students’ needs and their performance during the process of English teaching and learning.In this point of view, this paper will choose the classrooms of English learning in China, andcompare the students’ responses of TT as well as their preference with the present situationof TT.With the academic developing, there had been an increasing numbers of researches onTT, however, the shortage of most studies on this subject is that most of these studies hadpay less attention to the difference between the real TT and students’ preference. What arethe functional features of TT in foreign language classroom? Can they meet the students’expectations? Do they stimulate the students’ English learning?According to the above conditions, we took an investigation to study the abovequestions and meanwhile to provide sufficient proof to the teachers and let them know whattype of TT is expected and accepted by the students. Accordingly, an investigation will bemade in six college classes in the university. Six teachers teaching college English and over300students are sampled without been noticed beforehand. The research background andpurpose will be described as below
1. 1 Research background
It had been a hot issue in the whole world that how to improve English communicativecompetence. In order to meet this goal, learners and researchers has made great amount ofefforts, not only through English status promotion, but also through English education.According to Xinhua News Agency (2001), many elementary school and high schools hadplanned English teaching classes. Years passed, as the developing of globalization, Englishhad been more important and now most of schools have already realized bilingual education.In many bilingual education programs, English classes are conducted in English only, whilebecause it is probably the major source of comprehensible target language input the learner islikely to receive.” (Nunan, 1991, p.189)In English teaching classes, the language which is used by the teacher is not only themedia of transferring, but also the acquisition that students need to achieve. Through TT,teachers transfer their knowledge, organize teaching as well as interact with the learners,which mean that TT is the foundation for all the projects above. In this point of view, studyon TT comes to be one of the most important and popular parts of English teachingclassroom research.
