  1.1 The Purpose of the Study研究目的
  It is widely agreed that communicative competence is the ultimate goal for college studentsto achieve. For this reason, our current college English course-books should be designed tohelp students to achieve such goal. This thesis intends to check whether our course-books areindeed designed to cultivate students’ communicative competence by both external andinternal analysis and uation. The external uation is to check whether the course-bookincludes relevant components corresponding with communicative competence; and theinternal uation is to see how these communicative components are treated. By suchanalysis and uation, we can get the answers to the questions whether the course-book isdesigned to cultivate students’ communicative competence and how well it serves the goal.This thesis aims to answer the following research questions:a. Is the New Century College English course-book (for non-English majors) designed tocultivate students’ communicative competence?b. To what extent is the course-book serving the communicative goal?c. what aspects of the course-book should be improved to better serve the goal and how itshould be modified?


  
  1.2 The Significance of the Study研究意义
  Many linguistic scholars and instructors have already done kinds of analysis anduations of current college English course-books for varied intentions. However, this studyintends to analyze and uate the course-book for the very purpose (whether our currentcollege English course-books are designed to present and cultivate communicativecompetence) on the very theoretical s (Bachman and Palmer’s communicativecompetence). Through the external and internal analysis and uation of currentcourse-books, the strong points and more importantly the weaknesses can be observed andpointes out for further course-books design or modification.There are five major significance of course-book uation concluded by ChengXiaotang (2002:51-52), they are:a. Course-book uation is helpful for education administration departments, schools,and teachers to make the right decisions when they want to  a satisfactory Englishcourse-book for students with specific purposes.b. Course-book uation is in favor of teachers in ing and adjusting on the in-ueaching materials.c. Course-book uation is conductive to education administration departments,schools and teachers for reuation of the existing teaching materials.d. Course-book uation is good for course-book compilers to absorb the strengths ofthe existing materials in order to make better ones.e. Course-book uation is helpful to course-book compilers to have a correctunderstanding of their own teaching materials.
  


  1.3 The Layout of the Thesis论文布局
  The whole thesis is composed of five chapters.Chapter One is the general introduction, which includes the purpose and significance ofthe study, and the relevant research questions as well as the layout of the thesis.Chapter Two is theoretical basis and literature review.
