摘要:The study is aimed at improving the current situation. The researcher attempts to probe a new methodof teaching phrasal verbs to help the teachers and students. Recently, cognitive linguistics at home andabroad has developed so rapidly that it has begun to gain a dominant position in linguistic theory.

It lays special emphasis upon such aspects as prototype theory, the underlying link between thepolysemy of phrasal verbs and particles, metaphor and metonymy mechanisms and the conceptual blendingtheory. Categories and prototypes are a pair of important concepts in cognitive linguistics. The classicalview of categorization claims that categories come as homogeneous units with clear-cut borderlines andthat all members are characterized by a limited number of essential features. In contrast with the classicalmodel, the cognitive prototype hypothesis of categorization claims that categories are not homogeneous,but have a prototype, good and bad members, and have fuzzy boundaries. Category members do not allshare the same discrete attributes, but may be linked by family resemblances. Categorization is somethingthat underlies the mental processes of language comprehension and language production (Ungerer &Schmid, 2008). Traditionally, metaphors and metonymies have been regarded as figures of speech.However, philosophers cognitive linguists have shown that metaphors and metonymies are powerfulcognitive tools for our conceptualization of the world. To replace the fairly static picture ofconceptualization with a more dynamic approach, the cognitive-linguistic view has been extended toinclude aspects of ongoing language processing—the blending view of concepts. It is the theory of howmental spaces are constructed and blended during online language processing (ibid.) .


Chapter Two Literature Review


The author make a distinction between phrasal verb and verb phrase. Phrasal verbs are idiomaticcombinations of a verb and adverb, or a verb and preposition ( or verb with both adverb and preposition )( Longman Dictionary of Phrasal Verbs, 1983). Wang Rongpei(1997) claims that phrasal verb is made upof a verb and an adverb or a preposition or both two, which is used to express an integrated meaning,alsocalled multi-word verbs. Phrasal verbs function as a verb. Verb phrase is a concept in TransformationalGenerative Grammar, which mainly includes major verb and preposition、adverb and other complement.For instance, Jack gave a present to his girlfriend, except Jack, others are called VP(verb phrase). In thefact, verb phrase is a free phrase, the complement after the central verb can be NP(noun phrase)、VP、PP(preposition phrase)、S(sentence) etc.(Zhao Yonggang, 2007).


2.1 The Related Research of Phrasal Verbs abroad
Briefly reviewing the history of phrasal verbs, the researchers distinguish them in accordance with themain linguistics approaches which include approaches emerged before 1980s and cognitive linguisticswhich is popular for the past 30 years. Traditional approaches of linguistics have far-reaching influence onthe teaching practice. In the following content, the author will give details clearly. In fact, any one of themain approaches of linguistics results in the change of the teaching methods. In return, teaching methodswould help linguists develop further researching fields and give new ideas to the teaching practice.
