Chapter Five Data Results and Discussion


5.1 The Analysis of the Questionnaires
Before the experiment, on March 2013,the pre-questionnaire designed in Chinesewas given to the subjects both in the experimental group and the control group to leam thecurrent situation of the teaching effect of the college English writing. The total number ofquestionnaires handed out was 150 and the number of valid questionnaires was 144.The pre-questionnaire was designed in three parts, including students' writing attitudes(Ql, QIO and Qll), the overall evaluation of the current situation of teaching collegeEnglish writing (Q2, Q3, Q4, Q6, Q7, Q8, Q9, Q12,Q13, Q14 and Q15), as well as thedifficulties they encountered while writing in English (Q5, Q13,and Q16). The results of thisquestionnaire just show as follows. As to the results of Ql, QIO and Qll of the pre-questionnaire, students' answersrevealed their general writing proficiency was beyond satisfaction. In the four skills ofEnglish, listening, speaking, reading and writing, nearly half of the students regarded writingas the most difficult one, and reading, listening and speaking were less difficult. Almost 85%subjects surveyed were not very satisfied with their writing proficiency, among which22.2 % did not gratify their writing performance at all, and only 15% of them were basicallycontent with their writing proficiency. Among them,most of the subjects, nearly 88%,thought that the writing purpose was only to pass the final examination or cram for thewriting assignments rather than to make a social communication with others.

Conclusion


Writing, a very important language output skill, is usually considered as one of the mostimportant skills of the general requirements of the college English syllabus. According to thestatistics of this study, there is no escaping fact that the overall writing competence of thenon-English major students in the independent college is relatively weak. They are lack ofinterests in English writing and passive in learning. This thesis firstly provides an overviewof the development of the four main writing approaches (product approach, process approach,genre approach and length approach), and then it distinctly analyzes the features, advantagesand the implementation process of the PBL.The results of the empirical study reported in the previous section have lent somesupport to the claims that the PBL has many advantages in improving students' Englishwriting proficiency. This study demonstrates that the non-English majors in the independentcollege are able to be stimulated to involve themselves in English writing and their writingproficiency can be improved. It also shows that the writing projects can efficiently arousestudents' interests in English writing and improve their communicative ability andautonomous learning ability.
