se social developmentand international exchanges.According to The Teaching Syllabus,the basic writing requirement for collegestudents with non-English major is that students should be able to: express personalviews freely on general topics, compose English abstracts in their own specialization,and write short English papers on topics of their specialty; write in English atopic-assigned composition with 100-120 words within half an hour, which iscomplete in content, sound in logic,correct in grammar and accurate in language.College English Teaching Syllabus (revised edition), issued by the nationalministry of education in September 1999,breaks the individual requirements aboutEnglish reading ability before, puts forward the basic requirements about the listening,speaking, reading, writing and translating. The purpose of it is to make the studentscommunicate information in English. In addition to the requests of the syllabus,CET-4 and CET-6 also come up with new requirements for students, set the minimumcomposition score,namely must reach six points (full marks 15 points), which requiresthe students to pay enough attention to writing. Besides, whether in the TOEFL, EPTtest, or postgraduate entrance exam, English writing is one of compulsory items all thetime.


Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 Krashen's Theory
Krashen's theory of second language acquisition has long been considered aclassic hypothesis in language teaching and studying. It consists of five mainhypotheses, of which the most widely known aspect is "The Acquisition-LearningDistinction", mainly because it is the most fundamental part in Krashen's theory. Twoindependent systems of second language performance have been established inKrashen's hypothesis一i.e., 'the acquired system" and 'the learned system”.The acquired system, also known as "acquisition", is primarily a subconsciousprocess that is very similar to the process children undergo when they acquire theirfirst language. During natural communications, it requires meaningful interaction inthe target language. Under such circumstance, speakers are concentrated not on theform of their utterances, instead, they are observed in the communicative actions.The learned system, also known as "learning", is composed of a consciousprocess that would lead to the access of conscious knowledge (e.g., knowledge ofgrammar rules). It can be seemed as the product of formal instruction. As suggestedby Krashen, acquisition is much more important than learning.
Obviously, people have two ways of developing language ability. Acquisition,the process used for developing native languages,involves the subconsciousacceptance of knowledge where information is stored in the brain through the use ofcommunication. Learning, on the other hand, is the conscious acceptance ofknowledge 'about' a language. This is often the product of formal languageinstruction, as stated by Krashen.The Monitor hypothesis,which was termed to provide an explanation for therelationship between acquisition and learning, defines the influence learning on theacquisition.
