In the book Context and Culture in LanguageTeaching, the author stated that our choice of words is constrained by the context in which weuse the language, and foreign language pedagogy should be aware of the need to teachlanguage in context. Mason (1994) made a research and found out that students would rely onprevious background knowledge of the subject matter to help them understand lectures.According to these context researches the experts have made, we can know its importance.


1.2 Research Objectives
Listening comprehension is important in both English listening test and daily Englishcommunication, the research on it becomes a very meaningful and necessary part for Englishlistening teaching and learning. With the speedy progress of teaching technologies in recentyears and in light of the nature of listening and the practical demand, English learningespecially English listening becomes a central part for fluent English communication. At thesame time, some scholars are devoted to making researches on listening comprehension, suchas Dong Hui, Zhang Sheru, Zhuang Lin, Zhang Qing, Liu Jianbo and Zhuang Lin. Intheoretical sense, they studied the necessity, feasibility and strategies of listening cultivation.But the researches associated with EFL listening are still rudimentary in China. In theteaching practice of listening comprehension, some teachers just left the students learning bythemselves and neglected the important role of them, thus resulting in the reduction ofstudents' learning interest. Hence, the current problem is whether teachers can reconstructtheir roles effectively in teaching application to satisfy the demand of current teaching andlearning situation.


Chapter 2 Applied Theories


2.1 The Nature of Listening Comprehension
Listening comprehension has been one of the heated focuses in English teaching andlearning as an important language skill,.It is defined that by processing a language sample to listening to a language, listeningcomprehension is an ability to receive and decode oral communication. Listening involvesreception of the decoding of input, predicting and compensating, and is often mistakenlyconsidered as a passive skill. It is also a two-way process. Actually,not only the speaker isdelivering,but also the listener must obtain knowledge from the aspects of linguistic andnon-linguistic sources, to decode the message.As we all know, listening comprehension is an invisible mental process that is hard todepict. Listeners have responsibilities distinguishing sounds, understanding vocabularies andgrammatical structures, interpreting stress and intention in a larger socio-cultural context ofthe utterance. This is the reason why an exact definition of listening has never existed. Peoplewere always thought listening only as a receptive language skill for a very long time under theinfluence of behaviorism. Carl Weaver looked upon it as a process that occurred when ahuman organism received information orally.
