摘要:On the basis of Illeris, comprehensive learning theory, the author borrows ideasfrom currently existing needs analysis models to construct a new one for analyzingcollege English needs. The new model provides a clear picture of needs with respectto learners, teachers,colleges and society.

Nowadays China stays in a stage which the development of social politics,economics, and culture are going forward in a high speed. As a result, the demandingsituation of people with ability is changing constantly. The re-orientation of collegeEnglish and the direction of foreign language teaching have been the focus of society,education department, and English teachers at large. As the social needs change,college English teaching is confronted with a far-reaching reform and the challengesas well as opportunities for a further development. In order to formulate scientific,systematic and individualized college English syllabus to guide their own teaching,colleges and universities' primary task is to thoroughly investigate needs of learners,teachers,and society towards college English teaching. Needs analysis is such a kindof research which is more likely to be a diagnosis process for implementing andimproving next step of teaching plan.
Scientific and effective needs analysis is inseparable from the guidance of soundtheories. The modern concept of learners' competence comprises not only relevantprofessional qualifications, but also general skills and a broad range of personalqualities such as flexibility, openness, independence, responsibility, creativity, etc. tomanage the common and democratic fiinctions of society. Traditional learningtheories fail to match this concept because they can't provide the understanding oflearning in the same broad sense. To be up-to-date, Illeris combined a great variety ofrelevant and important theories to build up a comprehensive learning model whichdevelops a very broad and open definition of learning covering all the acquisitionprocess of the whole range of different competencies. It deals with the integration oftwo very different processes of learning at the same time, namely an externalinteraction process between the learner and social, cultural or material environment,and an internal psychological process of acquisition and elaboration crucially dependent on the interaction process. Further, it is a process of integrated interplaybetween the flinction of cognition, dealing with the learning content, and theemotional fiinction, providing the necessary mental energy of the process. As thetheoretical basis of needs analysis, comprehensive learning theory is more completethan communicative approach and learning-centered approach that appear in an earlystage. On one hand, various social environments determine the specific context andbasic conditions when learning takes place, which affects the objective languageneeds of learners, and then become their target needs. On the other hand, as learningsubject, the learners interact with external environments on their own initiative.During the process different learning needs occur, including needs about environment,knowledge, skills,strategies, motivation and so on. Hutchinson & Water's andDudley-Evans & St. John's models are more successful and complete ones in theexisting foreign language needs analysis models.
