摘要:The paper is classified into six parts. The first part is introduction, including themain purpose and significance of the study. The second part is an overview of therelated theoretical and empirical studies on lexical chunks abroad and at home.

The structure of idiomaticity does not allow any alteration, so there isno scope of creation, while free collocation belongs to provisional combination, whichlacks of prediction, and is difficult to comprehend and master. If some vocabulariesappear in relatively stable structure, there will be specific scope in the pragmaticfunctions and sense. Ultimately, it is regarded as conventionalized lexical chunks.From lexeme to sentence, the discontinuity of constituents of the lexical chunksenhances, that is, the scope of pragmatic change inside the lexical chunks get biggerand bigger. The lexical chunks can be seen as creative use of vocabularies, which isthe development of teaching vocabularies.Through applying of lexical chunks to reading comprehension, we can not onlychange the traditional mode of learning, but we can also better solve our improper useof language. The traditional teaching approaches strongly put emphasis on thestudying knowledge. However, they ignore the application of language in proper use.Therefore, there is theoretical significance in the usage of lexical chunks applied toreading.


Chapter Two Literature Review


More and more researchers at home and abroad realized the importance oflexical chunks approach gradually on the basis of admitting the importance ofgrammar teaching. Lexical chunks can be paid more attention. And researches of thembecome mature.


2.1 Basic knowledge about lexical chunks
In 1975, linguist Becker put forward the principle of language studies in PhrasalLexicon, that is, “Any theory of the English language that is expounded in the Englishlanguage must account for (or at least apply to) the text of its own exposition”; Hethought that utterance is the repetition, amendment and structural connection ofcomposing more words; therefore, they must replace traditional linguistics theorieswith theories of language chunking. Subsequently, a lot of scholars made thoroughinvestigations and discussions on lexical chunks. Michael Lewis successivelypublished The lexical approach in 1993, Implementing the Lexical Approach in 1 997,Teaching Collocation in 2000; Schmitt and McCarthy’s thesis Selections establisheda theoretical basis for lexical chunks approach and aroused people to pay attention tothem step by step.


2.1.1 Definitions of Lexical Chunks
The significance of conception of lexical chunks has already been accepted bymany researchers at present. The initial definition of lexical chunks is described to bediverse, but the grammar form is comparatively stable, which includes long lexicalchunks and sentence frame. Wei Naixing thought that various lengths and differentcomplicated, simplified structures were assembled phrase in advance. However, thedefinition is not accepted extensively at present.Different researchers have different statements in terms of language phenomenonof “lexical chunks”.
