1.1 Overview of the thesis

Systemic-functionallinguistics (SFL), as its name suggests, considers function and semantics as the basis ofhuman language and communicative activity. Halliday developes a theory of thefundamental functions of language, in which he provides the language learners with anorientation to functional grammar. Three metafunctions are brought forth as ideational,interpersonal and textual, each of which contributes to the construction of meaning inlanguage. The ideational metafiinction deals with the logical and experiential contenteither in the world or in our minds that has been represented and constructed withinlanguage; the interpersonal metafunction is concerned with the stance which the speakeror writer takes relative to the listener or reader; the textual metafunction is to organizethe messages realized in the system of theme and information into cohesion.
The focusof this study is the textual metafunction, and the way in which certain interpersonalmeanings, i.e. meanings that belong to the interpersonal metafunction, are embeddedwithin the choice of Theme in a clause complex. Within the textual metaftinction thetwo choices Theme and Rheme form the major system. Modal Adjuncts are intrinsicallyinterpersonal in nature, adding information that reflects the writer's or speaker'sjudgment. Interpersonal Themes are not necessarily obligatory elements of Theme asthey can occur in other positions in the clause. However,as Halliday points out, they arecommonly in thematic position because “If the speaker includes within the messagesome element that presents his or her own angle on the matter, it is natural to make thisthe point of departure: Til tell you what I think,,(Halliday,1994:49), Modal Adjuncts have two sub-types, Comment Adjuncts and Mood Adjuncts. Comment Adjuncts arerealized by expressions which comment on the clause as a whole, such as generally,unfortunately. Mood Adjuncts are more commonly linked to the Finite within the clause,for example obviously, actually. Based on Mathusius's research on theme-rhemedistinction, thematic theory has been perfected by linguists at home and abroad, such asHalliday, Danes, Brown and Yule, etc. and at home there are Hu Zhuanglin, ZhuYongsheng, Yan Shiqing and HuangGuowen, etc. They have made great contributions tothe development of the thematic theory. Following the terminology of theme and rhemecreated by Matheusius, Halliday deeply probed into the theme and rheme in hissystemic-functional grammar.
