Chapter Twoliterature review
Initiation-Response-Follow-up (IRF) model is widely accepted and employed toanalyze structures in classroom. Feedback as the third move plays an important role inclassroom teaching. Therefore, it is necessary to pay more attention to it. This chapter isdevoted to the literature review of IRF, class type and teacher feedback in terms ofdefinition, classification, function and previous studies as well.
2.1 Initiation-Response-Follow-up Model
The IRF (Initiation-Response-Follow-up) model of classroom teaching, first putforward by Sinclair and Coulthard in 1975, has been considered as the typical exchangepattern between teachers and students, and a researching focus for linguistic andeducational researchers in the past decades. It is also called Birmingham Model. Sinclairand Coulthard (1975) found that language in classroom followed a very rigid sequence,and the speaking patterns were highly structured. Five hierarchies exist in classroomdiscourse between teachers and students. They are lesson, transaction, exchange, moveand act in a descending order. Exchange and transaction play the most important roles inthe whole class. Transaction consists of more than one exchange. There is a boundaryexchange at the beginning or the ending of each transaction. The boundary of eachtransaction is presented by "well", "right", "now", "good" and "ok". There is always acomparatively long stop between every two exchanges. Boundary exchange is composedby frame and focus. The frame represents the beginning or the ending of an exchange,while focus is the metal statement of the exchange content with informing, directing oreliciting following up. The typical exchange consists of initiation move, response moveand feedback move. That is called IRF model. A lot of researches have been done basedon this model. An obvious difference between classroom interaction and naturalinteraction is that it is the teacher who always initiates the conversation. The teacherplays a role in initiating students talk or giving them the indirection to make conversation.However, in a real class there are always more than three moves. Teachers may askquestions again till a satisfying answer is got. Researches on IRF model mainly focus onteacher talk including teacher questions and teacher feedback.
