Chapter Two Literature review
To figure out where Occupational English (OE) fits in ESP, it is necessary to have aclear view of what ESP is. In general terms, ESP is a sphere of teaching Englishlanguage in order to meet specific needs of the learners. The word “special” is not abouta special kind of English, but the content and purposes that are special.
2.1 English for special purposes
2.1.1 Definition of ESP
From the early 1960’s, ESP has grown to become one of the most prominent areasof EFL teaching today. There are mainly four influential definitions overwhelmed theESP community. The most prominent definition suggested by Tom Hutchinson and AlanWaters (1987), who defined ESP as an approach rather than a product. They thoughtESP was not involved in a kind of particular language, teaching material, ormethodology. They proposed that the basis of ESP was a simple question, that is, why alearner needs to learn a foreign language? The answer of this question was related withlearner’s needs and circumstances, thus it determined the needs as leading position inthe ESP. Needs produced by different purposes of learners, and it varied with differentlearning purposes. For example, in order to attending business meeting inspeaking-English countries or engaging in reservation work in hotel, it offers foreignlanguage learning course. This purpose is just a beginning of learning a foreignlanguage.
