摘要:''The purpose of foreign language learning is not to memorize the rules of grammarby heart but promote listening, speaking, reading and writing. The grammar learningserves for the cultivation of skills in language use and for helping students use languageand improve their ability in listening, speaking, reading and writing.

ge. Therefore,the key point in whether grammar should betaught in class is dependent on whether the explicit knowledge can be altered into implicitknowledge (Gu Qiyi,2005:45).


2. Methodology


2.1 Research questions
The study aims to investigate the following questions:1. What are common ways teachers adopt to teach grammar?2. What is students' attitude grammar teaching methods applied by teachers?3. What are teachers' attitudes to grammar teaching methods?


2.2 Subjects
The participants in the study are152 students and 8 teachers from two senior highschools in Wuhan, i.e. Hongshan Senior High School and School Attached to HuazhongUniversity of Science and Technology. The eight teachers from the two schools areinterviewed in this study. 152 students are in grade one and two of the two schools and 8teachers, aging from 24 to 50, teach English subject. Some of the teachers are new andrelatively younger whereas some are elder and more experienced. Moreover, 6 studentsare chosen at random to take part in my interviews.


2.3 Instrument


2.3.1 Classroom observation
Classroom observation acts as an effective way to observe and investigate the in-classsituations. Before the accomplishment of study, the author spends two weeks in the twoschools mentioned above observing and making journals about the real situations ofgrammar classes under the supervision of senior teachers.The observation mainly focuseson the following respects:procedures of grammar teaching, in-class activities and students'behavior in grammar lesson.


2.3.2 Questionnaires
Questionnaire for students is on the purpose of exploring students' attitude togrammar teaching and learning in class together with the effects of teachers' grammar teaching methods. Five aspects are included in the questionnaire, that is, the timeconsumed on grammar learning, the effects of students' grammar learning, the atmospherein class,the teaching methods which teachers use,and students' attitudes towards grammarteaching.Questions and options in the questionnaire are designed by the author accordingto the Reference of corresponding materials and careful observation.

Conclusion


A summary of facts from the results of classroom observation, questionnaires andinterviews could be made as follows.


First of all, the most universally adopted method of grammar teaching is still thedeductive method, with which teachers focus on the acquisition of grammatical formsrather than its meaning and usage.
