Chinese motion verbs are intransitive verbs which can’t collocate with objects.But the collocation of motions verbs with nominal phrases appears frequently atpresent.For instance,pǎo huǒchēzhàn(跑火车站)‘run to train stations’,zǒu jīcéng(走基层)‘go to the grass-roots’,bēn xiǎokānɡ(奔小康)‘strive for a relativelycomfortable life’.Among these motion verbs,the verb“pǎo”is one of the mostrepresentative motion verbs(Chen,2018).Thus,this thesis takes the“Pǎo NP”construction as the research object,attempting to offer an explicit illustration of“PǎoNP”construction.

“Pǎo NP”belongs to a kind of unconventional structure of“intransitive verb+NP”structure(Huang,2009).Numerous scholars explore the causes of the formation of“intransitive verb+NP”structure from syntactic level(Guo,1999;Xie&Wang,2009).The representative idea is that the immediate situation between transitive sentencepattern and intransitive sentence pattern caused by un-categorization makes“Vi+NP”possible.Some scholars also discuss the cognitive motivations of“intransitiveverb+NP”structure(Wang,2006;Shi,2008).From these researches,“Pǎo NP”construction is just taken as an example instead of a single research object,although itis commonly used in daily life and social contexts.

Among a few papers about the individual study of“Pǎo NP”construction,moststudies are conducted to discuss the syntactic relationship of the“Pǎo NP”construction,the semantic changes of“pǎo”and the role of“NP”,even explore thecognitive mechanism of this construction.In the previous studies,there are still some problems.Researchers just figure out the meaning of the verb“pǎo”and the role of“NP”,they just regard the construction as a motion verb followed by a noun.Lessattention is paid to the syntactic and semantic features of this whole construction.Hence this thesis studies the“Pǎo NP”construction as a whole in terms of constructiongrammar.

1.2 Research Questions

The“Pǎo NP”construction occupies a special position in the research of“intransitive verb+NP”structure.This thesis tries to analyze the“Pǎo NP”construction clearly and effectively based on the previous studies,to illustrate arelatively systematic research of this construction.The following questions the thesisplanning to answer are as follows:

(1)What are the syntactic and semantic features of the“Pǎo NP”construction?

(2)What are the cognitive mechanisms of the“Pǎo NP”construction?

(3)What are the cognitive motivations of the“Pǎo NP”construction?

The first question is to state“what the‘Pǎo NP’construction is”,which helps todescribe the language phenomenon.The second question is to answer“how the‘Pǎo NP’construction is formed”and the third question is to explain“why the‘Pǎo NP’construction is used”,which is beneficial to the explanation of the languagephenomenon.The three questions are combined to accurately and effectively study the“Pǎo NP”construction.This thesis intends to give a comprehensive analysis of the“Pǎo NP”construction in terms of construction grammar.
