Chapter Five Major Findings and Implications


5.1 Major findings
The present research sets out to investigate the influences of the training ofnoticing and memorizing lexical chunks on the grammar ability of freshmen of acollege. In this research,two natural classes from Grade 2012, Taiyuan University ofTechnology, have been observed in terms of the relationship between the learning andemployment of lexical chunks and the ability of their grammar. At the same time, theresearcher also testifies the hypotheses before the experiment. The research offers anopportunity to test the trend of the subjects' grammar ability based on the obtainedresearch data,and to test if lexical chunks can be taught in a real class according tothe scores before and after the experiment. The data collected from the research provethat lexical chunks show positive influence on students' grammar ability, such aswriting fluency ,completeness and accuracy and so on. The following is the majorfindings of this experiment according to the data collected from the experiment.

Conclusion


Grammar teaching has been an indispensable and essential part of foreignlanguage teaching. Traditional grammar teaching is a kind of teaching and practicingof grammatical rules, whose disadvantages have been discussed for many years.People have been arguing that grammatical structures can not be transformed intounconscious language ability.However, with the theory of language chunks being popular, researchers foundthat grammar is no longer a fixed structure but a unity of structures and meaning,which is mutative and disconrsal. That is to say, foreign language teachers should seeand teach language in a new perspective.This thesis aims at investigating if there are any positive effective of lexicaltheory on grammar ability and is based on the theory of Lexical Approach by MichaelLewis (1997). The experiment is divided into three stages with both quantitativeanalysis and qualitative analysis.
