摘要:The present research is trying to get an overall view of college English teachers’grammar teaching beliefs in the environment of college English curriculum reform. Itaims to study whether teachers’ beliefs change with the curriculum reforms andteaching approaches shift.
2.2 Grammar Teaching
Definitions of grammar teaching mainly cover two aspects, which is “presentingand explaining grammar” and “practicing grammar” (e.g. Ur, 1996; Hedge, 2000).However, it is too narrow to define grammar teaching. In fact, grammar teaching canbe divided into two ways: explicit grammar teaching and implicit grammar teaching.In other word, grammar can be taught only through presenting and explaininggrammar or practicing grammar. It can also be taught by errors correction, exposinglearners the correct structure or discovering grammar rules by learners themselves.Ellis (2006) claimed that “grammar teaching is viewed as the presentation and practiceof discrete grammatical structures” (p. 84) and he gave a broad definition: “Grammar teaching involves any instructional technique thatdraws learners’ attention to some specific grammatical form in sucha way that it helps them either to understand it metalinguistically and/or process it in comprehension and/or production so that they caninternalize it.”(p. 84) Grammar, as a fundamental component of language, may facilitate theacquisition of a foreign/ second language and is conducive for cultivatingcomprehensive language using competence. The status and role of grammar teachingin language education has been heatedly debated for centuries in both themethod-oriented era and the SLA-oriented era. In the era of grammar-translationmethod, grammar played a central role in language education. After that time, the roleand status of grammar in language education experienced ups and downs.
