本文的定性分析部分表明,名词化在“质”和“量”同样重要,中国英语专业硕士生在名词化的“质”方面基本能做到正确合理使用。
Chapter One: introduction         
As one of the typical features of written English, nominalization has attracted the attention of linguists of different schools for many years and has been dealt with from different perspectives. Both theoretical and empirical studies are involved in the research of nominalization in various writings. Under the framework of systemic-functional grammar, the current corpus-based research probes into nominalization in the writings of Chinese postgraduates majoring in English. The first chapter is devoted to the background of studies on nominalization, the significance of this study and the organization of this thesis.
1.1 Background of this study
    Jespersen (1924) made a first attempt on the phenomenon of English grammar in his The philosophy of Grammar. However, his study in this field is restricted to sentence level, which made it difficult to further the research from the perspective of discourse and genre.
Then transformational grammarians represented by Chomsky also made diverse attempts on the descuiption of nominalization, but similarly, being limited to the sentence level, also failed to study this linguistic phenomenon in authentic contexts. Unlike studies nominalization of other main linguistic Halliday, schools, the systemic-functional perspective nominalization, pioneered by is not restricted to syntactic expands to the study of textual functions of nominalizations in written analysis.     Then under the framework of Halliday's functional grammar, both theoretical and empirical studies on nominalization are conducted. Qualitative analysis is adopted by theoretical researchers to specify the functions of nominalization in discourse. They found that the functions include improving textual cohesion, objectivity, conciseness, logicality, informativity, impartiality, believability, authority, non-negotiability and etc.
And previous empirical studies on nominalization mainly focused on two aspects, stylistic features of nominalization and nominalization acquisition of Chinese students. Studies regarding the former aspect (Xiao and Wang, 2001;Wang, 2003; Yang, 2006) reveals that nominalization frequency is in direct proportion to the formality of texts; while studies concerning the latter aspect are few in number. The finding is that Chinese students exhibit a deficiency in using nominalization in their writings compared with native English users. Some of the corpus-based studies (Xi, 2006; Wu, 2009) proved that the difference between Chinese learners and native users in nominalization is significant, while others (Wang and Chen, 2008) reported that the difference is insignificant.
