1.3 Key issues and research method
On the analysis of relevance of different figures of speech used in FLTRPNational English Debating Competition, this thesis attempts to evaluate the effectthose caused from the perspective of Relevance Theory, and throw a light for debatersto carefully choose figures of speech to help polish their debate language and help topersuade. Researches are done on the basis of material collection and analysis，of whichall the video materials are downloaded from the FLTRP official website. Also,comparison is made on relevance among different figures of speech.1.4 Structure of the dissertation

Chapter 2 Literature review

2.1 On Relevance Theory
Since Cooperative Principle was put forward by Grice, many scholars havebrought up some amendment and supplement to this impactftil theory. Among these,Relevance Theory put forward by Deirdre Wilson and Dan Sperber first in Relevance:Communication and Cognition (1986) and the second edition in 1995 contributedgreat to Cooperative Principle. Relevance Theory made an attempt to explore thelanguage interaction from the perspective of cognitive science. “From Aristotle through to modem semiotics, all theories of communicationwere based on a single model, which we will call the code model. According to thecode model, communication is achieved by encoding and decoding massages.Recently, several philosophers, notably Paul Grice and David Lewis, have proposed aquite different model, which we will cal the inferential model. According to theinferential model, communication is achieved by producing and interpretingevidence." (Sperber, D & Wilson, D. Relevance: Communication and Cognition.1986:2)However, when we live in the society and communicate with people，communication can not always be this simple. This inferential model enriches theway of encoding and decoding, in which producing and interpreting evidence duringcommunication is added. In this process, context also plays a very important role.
