Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 Relevant research at home and abroad
Research concerning debating competition at home and aboard involvesnon-linguistic field and linguistic field categorized as follows:


1) Non-linguistic field:首先,研究有关的辩论本身,包括辩论,辩论的技术,选择的辩论动议,辩论赛的影响,等等。例如,万江波(2010)介绍了议会的辩论的基础上,外研社全国英语辩论赛,并探讨其影响力等二,研究主要集中在辩论和英语教学之间的关系,尤其是大学英语教学的影响,如对改善英语口语,商务英语教学,在课堂上的应用,提高学生的整体素质,英语能力,和批判性思维能力中的应用。刘燕平(2010:3)使用在中国做美国教师教学研究之间的关系方面的批判性思维能力和英语辩论课程;王阿静(2005:05),试图找出提高学生的英语综合能力的有效途径;周峰(2007:04)胡卫平(2007:04)陈奕熙(2007:04)学习英语辩论议会做出贡献,以先进的英语口语教学等。第三,研究有关的逻辑。
First, researches are done regarding the debate itself, including debate system,debate technique, the selection of debate motions, the influence of debate competition,etc. For example, Wan Jiangbo (2010) introduced Parliamentary Debated based onFLTRP National English Debating Competitions and explored its influence etc.Second, researches are focused on the relationship between debate and Englishteaching, especially English teaching in college, such as influence on improvement oforal English,the application in Business English teaching, the application in class, theenhancement of students' overall quality, English ability, and critical thinking ability.Liu Yanping (2010:3) uses an American teacher teaching in China to do research onthe relationship between critical thinking ability and English debating course; WangAjing (2005:05) tried to find out the effective way to improve student'scomprehensive English ability; and also Zhou Feng (2007:04) Hu Weiping (2007:04)Chen Yixi (2007:04) studied on how parliamentary English debate make contributionto the advanced English oral English teaching et.Third, researches are concerning logic.


2) Linguistic field:
Linguistic field is a rising field, which also attracts much attention. Itscut-in-point is debate language from the perspective of rhetoric theory, pragmatics,etc. Many dissertations come to hedges, Cooperative Principle, Politeness Principle,Speech activity type, presuppositions, etc. In this field, Chen Fanfan (2009:10)analyzed the language characteristics of debate motions and debate argument; QinJunhong (2007:01) used Appraisal System to study debate discourse; Liu Xin (2011:07) studied modality metaphor in American presidential televised debate discourse; and Qi Yajun (2003:04) did research on intercollegiate debate discourse from theperspective of speech activity type etc.To sum up, research of debate is diversifying. The author hopes to have acontinuous stride on the road of debate research from the perspective of relevance offigures of speech.However, limitations indeed exist, for a majority of these theses are concerningChinese debate competition, that for English debate competitions are less, let aloneconcerning FLTRP National English Debating Competition.


1.2 Purpose and significance of this thesis
This thesis mainly focuses on several figures of speech in the English debatingcompetition based on the database of FLTRP National English Debating Competitionto evaluate the effect that is caused by the application of rhetoric question,question-answer, analogy, hyperbole, parallelism, and quotation, etc. Besides,proceeding from the perspective of Relevance Theoiy, this thesis discusses therelevance among different figures of speech to make out why language is a key factorto excellent English debating, and how these fi论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
