Conclusion


The original intention for this dissertation is mainly concerning two issues:First, what figures of rhetoric are most frequently used by debaters?Second, why these rhetoric figures are frequently used rather than other figuresof speech?For these two targets, they are not easily explained only by illustrating andexplaining. So Relevance Theory is the theoretical foundation. Based on the previousresearch, the author applies Sperber and Wilson's Relevance Theory to spread out thediscussion on rhetoric figures of debating competition mainly the FLTRP NationalEnglish Debating Competition.Debating is a discourse of human communication, which involves receivinginformation and expressing information. While debate has its own characteristics,debaters should clearly, logically express their argument within a short time and at thesame time, make an attempt to refote the other side. During this process, they expectto achieve great contextual effect with less processing effort. Just as one typicalmotion, language or thought,which is more important? Debating does not onlyconcern logic and argument, it is also the competing of languages, because it is thelanguage that carries thought. After deeply analyzing, the author can make thefollowing conclusions:
First, rhetoric question, question and answer sentence, and parallelism are themost frequently used rhetoric devices in debating completions.Second, as for the relevance, rhetoric questions are of greatest relevance,parallelism and question and answer sentence ranks second, analogy ranks third.Because rhetoric questions are usually put forward in a sentence without expectingthe answer and sometimes the question is an unquestioned fact, so the debater canachieve great contextual effect. And for listeners,the opponent side sometimes cannotgive a convincing and powerful rebuttal at such a short time, they will ignore thequestion or do not refute to the point; the judgers and the audience can easily get whatthe speaker's point, and are lead to the speaker's position and give applause. Thus,they use least processing effort. Parallelism and question and answer sentence maynot always pursue the maximum relevance, instead, they aim to achieve optimalrelevance. Analogy serves as both positive functions and negative functions. A goodanalogy in debate can achieve optimal relevance, because usually people will spendmore effort on comprehending the similarities between the two things compared in aspecific context. However, analogy can also bring bug into debate and usually is thefocus of attention for both sides.
