摘要:This thesis is composed depending on my memories, photos, audio records,journals that volunteer group members and I kept when we taught in Guizhou, as wellas letters we received from students later after the volunteer teaching.

Chapter Two: Literature Review


2.1 Pre-researches on Education in the Western Part of China
In Reference to several researches, two main research topics are frequentlystudied by scholars. Firstly, the educational expenditure could not meet the need of ahigh quality education. Another emphasis is placed on the study of local teachers'professional quality which in scholars' opinions are badly incompetent. Apart fromfinding existing problems in the western region, several suggestions are also providedto improve the education there. People's caring about education in the western part of China results from theconcern of economic development in the western part. The first line in To Learn,which is the first piece of educational work in ancient China and also around theworld, states as: “priority should be set on education to build a nation and to governthe people”(建国君民,教学为先).Only by developing education could a nation buildand develop (Jin, 2009:1). The backwardness of education in the western part ofChina causes the lack of talented people, which then results in the backwardness ofthe economy in that area. Conversely, underdeveloped economy would limit thedevelopment of education, which leads to a vicious circle (Ren, 2005). As the easternpart of China develops rapidly both in the economy and education, the western part ofChina is lagged behind farther and farther

2.2 Pre-researches on English Education in the Western Part of China
A large amount of researches on English Education focus on teachers. Theirdiscussions are centered to the deficiency of professional knowledge, the traditionalmethods of teaching, the mistaken ideas about English learning, as well as their poorsalaries and low social status in that region. Compared with the huge amount ofresearches on teachers,only a few of researches focus on local students. Furthermore,these researches mainly discuss left-behind students who lack the caring from parents. With the globalization and China's active participation in world affairs,Englisheducation attracts more and more concern in China. Meanwhile, the weakness ofEnglish education in the western part of China becomes more and more conspicuousgiven the fact that the overall quality of education is backward in the western region(Deng, 2002; Liu & Xiong, 2004). When seeking reasons, educationists coincidentallyput emphasis on local English teachers, which is mainly caused from two reasons.Firstly, since 1990s English teachers become the most popular educational researchtopic as educationists have realized that English teacher plays an essential role in EFLeducation (Guo & Liu, 2011).
