Chapter one: Conceptualizing the Study
1.1 Origin of the Research
Even today I still remember the news that reported by QianJiang Evening Newstwo years ago, which has been clipped out and put into my book. The report said thatseventeen students from Guizhou province were enrolled into a middle school inZhejiang province. The school grouped them into one class with other local students,which met with the strong opposition from some local parents. With an unavailingeffort to explain the excellent qualities of these seventeen students, the school had toreorganize the class, grouping these Guizhou students into a separate one. The localparents claimed that “the Educational level of Guizhou is far behind that of Zhejiang,which will no doubt affect local students' learning if these Guizhou students weremixed with local students in one class.” And others claimed “these Guizhou studentswho can afford to study in the eastern region are definitely children from wealthyfamily in their areas, and that will absolutely mislead our local students" (News report,2011:A17).The time I read the report I was just back from Guizhou. In seven years of mycollege life, I have been to Guizhou as a volunteer teacher for three times. Yet eachtime I could only spend half a month there teaching them English and then hurriedback to school before the close of summer vacation. As a student brought up andeducated in the eastern region,I have never considered about the students' life andstudy in the western region until I stepped onto the magnificent Yunnan-KweichowPlateau. Because of volunteer teaching, I had the chance to observe local people's life,to talk with local teachers and students directly, and to consider about their life andeducation more thoroughly than before. I found that the way they live and perform,the way they think and what they believe are as the same as those in the eastern region,though with features distinct from other groups of people due to differentgeographical, economical and social circumstances.

1.2 Research Questions and Purpose
This thesis is composed depending on my memories, photos, audio records,journals that volunteer group members and I kept when we taught in Guizhou, as wellas letters we received from students later after the volunteer teaching. Fragmentedstories are presented in a chronological sequence, introducing various people'sopinions and experiences about Guizhou education, especially English education inrural areas, aiming to reveal actual factors that influence the education there.Four questions are intended to be explored in this thesis. They are: (1) what iselementary English education like in rural areas of 9Guizhou? (2) Why it appears likethat? (3) How should we assess English education there? And finally, (4) what wecould do to develop English education there? These questions might be illustrated andbe dealt with as the thesis carries on.The purpose of this thesis is (1) to represent the actualities of English educationin rural schools of Guizhou whose merits and demerits have been neglected and beensimply judged for long. Meanwhile the thesis is trying to (2) provide a criticalviewpoint on the assessment of schools, teachers and students in western region.
