However, we can try our best to mediate the conflictor turn the conflict to its positive side in a proper way. Here the three tools belongingto interpersonal meaning are of great importance. For example, we can apply moodsystem to study the features of the typical speech role and its mood structure,modality system to get the features of the general modality types, values and orientations, person system to see how the parents show their power over thechildren and so on. After clarifying all the problems above, we will get a full generalpicture of the interpersonal system of parent-child conflict talk. And this is a big stepto mediating or even avoiding the conflict and finally comes to a happy ending.In conclusion, the present study aims to find out the features of the mood,modality and person systems of parent-child conflict talk in order to mediate oravoid the conflict. It is a meaningful attempt in study the interpersonal meaning ofparent-child conflict talk from the perspective of mood, modality and person systems.Besides, it also has its practical significance. It helps to maintain harmony betweenfamily members and even the harmony of the whole society.

Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Previous Studies on Conflict Talk
The term ‘conflict talk’ was first put forward in the symposium edited byGrimshaw (1990) and then widely applied to the study on conflict in language.Conflict talk appears when people do not stand for others’ ideas or behaviors.According to Honda A. (2002: 574), there are two definitions for ‘conflict talk’ fromdifferent perspectives. In the narrow sense, conflict talk refers to a type of speech act,in which each party stands firm for their own opinions on the controversial topicsduring the opposition. In this way, conflict talk functions as a speech act assertingopposite positions containing exchanges of disagreements and negotiations. In thebroad sense, conflict talk refers to a kind of interaction, which is a process ofopposition including both “the manifestation of opposition” and the whole process of“inducement, initiation, development, and management of opposition”. In otherwords, the term “conflict talk” means not only the “opposition”, but also the wholeprocess of opposition. The conflict talk in the present study is in the broad sense. Uptill today, lots of domestic and foreign scholars have made fruitful contributions tothis field in recent years through doing researches on conflict talk.

As is well known, there are three metafunctions in the field ofsystematic-functional grammar: ideational, interpersonal and textual function. Thetitle speaks for itself, there will be only one of the three applied to this paper, whichis the interpersonal meaning. Interpersonal function works when we use language tocommunicate information or goods-and-services to others, i.e. to maintainharmonious relations with them, to entertain them, to annoy them or to praise them,to influence their opinions and behaviors, or to get their help or arouse sympathy.
