CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION


1.1 Research Background
Druker(1973) once said “All the work is from mission and is closely related tomission”. Mission is the specific explanation of an organization’s reasons for being and isalso the basis of all the activities of an organization. The mission of an organization playsan important role in shaping the characteristics, leading the organization to success,making the goal of an organization clear, and exploring the essence of an organization.Without mission, the organization will lose the meaning of existing. Each organization hasits own unique mission. With the development of an organization and the changing ofoutside environment, the mission will also be changed accordingly.Mission statement is the direct manifestation of mission. According to Hossain(2004), a mission statement is a unique, clear and well written statement that articulate themission to different parties related to an organization. Mission statements are an integralpart of the strategic planning and implementation process that can provide direction tochoices in strategic direction (Keller, 1983; Pearce and Robinson, 1991). Therefore,mission statements are fairly ubiquitous, particularly among large organizations, especiallyamong in-profit organizations. More recently they have commonly existed withininstitutions of higher education as well, and this is particularly true of business schools.Although the basis of business schools and in-profit corporations is different, there area lot in common for the management of business schools and corporations. A successfulcorporation definitely pays much attention to the stakeholders, so does a successfulbusiness school. The sustainable development of business schools is due to the quality ofbusiness schools’ response to their stakeholders. While, a clear mission statement can tellthe stakeholders both within the organizations and outside the organizations what is theorganizations’ strategy and goal in order to achieve the stakeholders’ recognition. It istherefore not surprising that business schools devote considerable effort to the developmentand adoption of mission statements, given their strategic importance and the fact that they necessarily seek multi-stakeholder targets. However, if mission statements are to have achance of achieving the desired positive outcomes, they must be readable andcomprehensible to the targeted stakeholders as well as ensure the quality of the missionstatements in the standards of stakeholders identification and the components. Therefore,crafting a good mission statement is not only a fundamental requirement, but also a realchallenge for business schools.

1.2 Research Significance
As stated earlier, a successful and clear mission statement is of great importance to thedevelopment of business schools. However, if a mission statement is to have a chance ofachieving the desired positive outcomes, it must ensure the quality of mission statementsand be readable and comprehensible to the targeted stakeholders. This thesis will comparethe mission statements of famous business schools between China and the US from twoperspectives, the quality of mission statements and the readability. And this study issignificant in two aspects.For one thing, the comparison including both the quality and the readability ofmission statements is comprehensive.
