摘要:As for conflict talk, the study has always been about the conflict discoursehappening at work place or some official situations. Parent-child conflict, as is quiteprivate and difficult to collect, has always been an untouched area.

field of interpersonal meaning.Among the scholars who study on interpersonal meaning, Halliday isirreplaceable. His influence is so irreplaceable a large number of later studies havemore or less based on his theory. In 1973, Halliday published his first influentialmonograph entitled Explorations in the Functions of Language wherein he definedinterpersonal meaning as “all use of language to express social and personalrelations”. Halliday takes mood, modality, and tenor as the main components thatform interpersonal meaning so as to make his systemic-functional grammar system awhole package. According to him, “Language is always enacting our personal andsocial relationships with the other people around us.” (Halliday, 2008:29).Additionally, he clearly points out that the interpersonal functions are realized bymood and modality systems together with person system, attitude words, cursewords and voice quality. His magnificent contribution to interpersonal meaning interms of mood and modality system is among the most important. He is the oneaccomplishes interpersonal meaning into an integrated and systematic theory.

5.1 The Analysis of Mood System of the Initiation of Par ent-ChildConflict Talk
The parent-child conflict talk, as the name suggests, consists of more than oneperson. In the case of Claire’s family, it can at most consist of five: two parents, twogirls and a boy. Family members of course will talk to or back to each other. Thenthere come the speaker’s initiation and the listener’s response. Mood system plays anessential role in creating and maintaining the on-going of this initiation and theresponse. During the exchange of language, the speaker also takes the lead andassigns role to the listener. If the speaker gets an expected response from the listener,the interaction maintains smooth and successful. However, when the response isunexpected, the interaction between family members will turn into a failure andaccordingly the parent-child conflict talk appears. Those unexpected response arecalled ‘discretionary’. The following figure shows the expected and discretionaryresponses from the listener.We can tell from the above figure, the conflict usually originates from fourkinds of initiation and discretionary response. They are contradiction vs statement,disclaimer vs question, refusal vs command and rejection vs offer. After analyzingthe data, the first three kinds often appear in parent-child conflict talk. The offer vsrejection normally doesn’t cause conflict between family members. They usuallyaccept the offer. If not, they will reject politely with “I’m sorry, but.....”, “Thank you,but......” or “I’d love that, but....”.
